Excerpt from “Annihilating Hope”

Once you become accustomed to the deafening silence, it is time to surrender. It is not an “aha” moment; it gradually creeps up on you when you are not even thinking. You don’t say, “Oh, here it is again, the silence that is so loud my chest vibrates.” It just slips into your life gradually, like a venomous snake. You hear the noise of it every night, but you just ignore it. Then, one day you realize that it is just a part of your life. You become keenly aware that your life will never be the same. You may try to turn the volume up on the television, but the silence still pounds in your head. There it is—it is just a part of you now and the easiest way to cope is to say, “I surrender.”
